Heat unfolds a protein and binds it to the fibre. It is the one place in cleaning where the universal instinct — hotter is better — makes the problem permanent.

In detail

A protein is a long molecule folded into a particular shape and held there by weak interactions. Heat overcomes them, the chain unfolds, and the exposed sections bond to whatever they are lying against — including the fibre of a fabric or the pile of a carpet. That is denaturation, and in cleaning terms it converts a soil sitting on a surface into one chemically attached to it, irreversibly. Almost everything else in this catalogue improves with temperature, which is exactly why this catches people: raising the heat speeds reactions, improves solubility and helps surfactants work, so the habit of reaching for hot water is usually correct and here makes the stain permanent. The soils affected are the protein ones — blood, egg, milk, dairy, and the mixed protein content of urine and vomit. The practical rules follow directly. Use cool water first and do not apply heat until the mark has gone; a hot wash or a tumble dryer before that point sets what remains. This is also the mechanism behind enzymatic cleaners, which work the other way, cutting protein into fragments small enough to rinse rather than trying to dissolve it whole.
