The sprays and foams sold for spot-cleaning carpet and upholstery. A professional cleaning body's assessment of the class is unusually direct: many of them cause more problems than they solve — sticky, soil-attracting residues, colour loss, yellowing, texture change — even when the directions are followed. The mechanism is residue. Anything left in the fibre after the water has gone is a tacky film that new soil sticks to, which is why the treated spot becomes a dark patch weeks later and why rapid re-soiling is attributed first to unrinsed product rather than to traffic. Its own recommended first attempt uses none of these products: blot, then a few drops of washing-up liquid in a cup of water, misted on and blotted, then rinsed.
