A mild alkali that is also a fine, soft abrasive. Its real usefulness is mechanical, and it is far weaker chemically than its reputation suggests.

Sodium bicarbonate is a mildly alkaline salt, and its two useful properties in cleaning are frequently confused. Chemically it is a weak base, which gives it modest help against acidic residues and some ability to loosen greasy soil, though far less than a true alkaline cleaner. Physically it is a soft, fine-grained abrasive, which is the property doing most of the work in the majority of applications it is recommended for: as a mild scouring agent it removes deposits without scratching harder surfaces. It is also genuinely useful against some odours, where it neutralises acidic volatile compounds, though it does not address odours that are not acidic. What it is not is a powerful cleaner, and the widespread advice to combine it with vinegar is chemically self-defeating — an acid and a base neutralise each other, and the visible fizzing is carbon dioxide being released from two ingredients that have consumed one another.
