Dishwasher door seal
The rubber seal round the door, which the odour guidance names separately: a damp cloth and mild detergent, and nothing abrasive or sharp.
Precautions
- Check the manufacturer's instructions
- Do not apply to a hot surface

In detail
The rubber seal around a dishwasher door sits where wash water, food debris and a closed door meet, and the manufacturer guidance on dishwasher odours gives it a line of its own. Whirlpool puts the cause of a smell in soil and standing water rather than in the machine: food trapped in the filter, the spray arms and the bottom of the tub. Its routine wipes the door seals and the interior with a damp cloth and mild detergent, alongside a monthly filter rinse and a hot empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or white vinegar. GE's manual for its own models sets the limit for every part of the machine, seal included: never a sharp object, a scouring pad or a harsh cleaner. Neither manufacturer names bleach for the seal, and neither gives it an interval of its own. The useful warning is against borrowing from other appliances. Whirlpool's fridge guidance forbids bleach on gaskets and insists they are dried fully; its washing machine seal gets a toothbrush and a drying routine; a range manufacturer says an oven gasket is not to be cleaned at all. Four seals, four instructions, and the one written for this seal is a damp cloth and mild detergent.
What works
Detergent is safe on, in specific conditions, Dishwasher door seal
Safe only in specific conditions
This is only appropriate within specific limits, and nothing is established outside them.
Only within these limits:
- Mild detergent on a damp cloth, wiped over the seal
- No sharp object, scouring pad or harsh cleaner on any part of the machine
- At least twenty minutes after a cycle, so the heating element has cooled
Two manufacturers speaking about their own machines. Whirlpool gives the wipe; GE gives the limit that applies to every part.
Precautions
- Check the manufacturer's instructions

Where sources disagree
GE's manual, treating a white mineral film on the interior, says to use no cleanser other than dishwasher detergent because others may foam. That answers a different problem from wiping a seal, but it is a reason to wipe rather than to leave detergent solution in the tub.

Whirlpool Corporation · Manufacturer documentation
Relied on for: That dishwasher odour comes from food debris trapped in the filter, spray arms or bottom and from standing water, that the door seals and interior are wiped with a damp cloth and mild detergent, and that a hot empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or white vinegar is run, ideally monthly. (states this directly)
Owner's Manual: Dishwashers GSD4500, GSD4800
GE Appliances · Manufacturer documentation
Relied on for: That a sharp object, scouring pads or harsh cleaners must never be used on any part of the dishwasher, and that its warning is to wait at least twenty minutes after a cycle for the heating element to cool before cleaning the interior, because otherwise burns can result. (states this directly)
Why
- Dishwasher door seal is explained by Moisture control and recurrence
The smell comes from soil and water left standing. Wiping the seal removes one; the hot empty cycle and drainage address the other.
