A fridge shelf is glass, and it has been cold for as long as the fridge has been on. That is the whole instruction: let glass shelves warm to ROOM TEMPERATURE before washing them, and avoid hot water on cold glass, because the temperature difference puts the pane under thermal stress. It is the same mechanism this catalogue models for a wood-burning stove door, running in the opposite direction — there the glass is hot and the water is cold. Either way it is a differential across a thickness of glass, and glass fails suddenly rather than gradually. Once it has warmed, a shelf is ordinary: warm water with mild dish soap, a soft microfibre cloth or non-scratch sponge, and thoroughly dry before it goes back in. What must not touch it is the same prohibited list as the liners — no abrasives, no scouring cleansers, no bleach, no window spray, nothing containing ammonia or petroleum. The practical version: take the shelf out, stand it on a towel until it stops feeling cold, then wash it. The FAQ adds that glass shelves and bins ARE dishwasher safe, while recommending handwashing — a permission and a preference, not a contradiction. The room-temperature rule survives both.
