A detail brush is a narrow, tapered or bottle-shaped brush for the geometry a flat tool cannot address: behind a bottom bracket, under a saddle, inside a tap spout, around an appliance seam, into a moulded corner, between the cogs of a cassette. It matters because soil concentrates precisely where cleaning is hardest — sheltered, sometimes wet, and out of sight — so the parts a cloth cannot reach are the parts doing most to make a thing look and smell dirty. The bicycle trade documentation specifies exactly this division of labour: a large soft-bristle brush with soapy water for the tubing, a tapered detail brush for tight spots, and a toothed tool to scrape larger debris from between the gears before any brush is used. The same division of labour applies everywhere. Grout is cleaned by working solution into the joint with a brush rather than wiping across it. A washing machine's seal folds and drawer housing need a brush and hot detergent, because a biofilm is removed mechanically. Bristle stiffness is chosen against the surface rather than against the deposit, and a brush carries soil between jobs unless it is rinsed.
