Floor pad
A consumable abrasive with a colour code. Choosing the pad is choosing how much of the floor you are prepared to remove.
In detail
The disc of bonded synthetic fibre that goes under a rotary machine or scrubber dryer, and the component that decides what the machine does. Pads are graded by abrasiveness and the grade is carried by COLOUR, which is why a flooring specification can say 'red pad' and mean something exact across every manufacturer. Paler pads are gentler and are used for polishing and light work; darker ones are aggressive and are used for scrubbing and for stripping a finish. The convention exists because the decision has to survive a busy building. Somebody choosing a pad at six in the morning is choosing an abrasive, and one two grades too coarse does not clean better — it takes the surface off. So flooring makers name the pad they want for each cleaning tier rather than trusting the operator. For a household reader the useful transfer is the principle rather than the colours. Everything this catalogue records about abrasion — that the scratch is permanent, that the mildest thing that works is the right thing, that a surface has a finish and the finish is what you are cleaning — is what a pad colour encodes.
