Microfibre mop
A flat head that carries far less water than a string mop, which is the property that makes it the right tool for every floor that must not get wet.

A flat microfibre mop holds a pad of split synthetic fibre against the floor, and its practical difference from a traditional string mop is how much water it puts down. That is decisive, because the majority of domestic floors are damaged by standing water rather than by the cleaner in it. Laminate flooring guidance from the European producers' association specifies damp rather than wet cleaning, and wood-floor guidance says the same, because moisture at a board joint swells the core or the timber and lifts the wear layer permanently. A pad wrung nearly dry, changed as it loads with soil, applies enough moisture to lift a film and not enough to reach a seam. Two habits decide whether it works. A pad saturated with soil stops cleaning and starts spreading, so several pads beat one bucket. And microfibre must be laundered without fabric conditioner, because the cationic coating fills the split-fibre structure and destroys the property being paid for. On a heavily soiled hard floor with a sealed, water-tolerant surface a string mop and a bucket still have the advantage of volume.
