Vacuum bag
The first filtration stage, and the one with a maintenance interval nobody is told. It must be changed before it is full.
In detail
In a dry vacuum the bag is not merely a container. Conservation guidance describes the machine as a series of stages: large pieces are caught in the bag, and air continues to blow through the bag carrying small particles that are then caught in additional filters. High filtration bags are available and are part of the filtration system rather than an accessory to it. Two consequences follow. A cheap bag in a machine with a good filter degrades the whole system, because the bag is doing the first separation. And a bag that is loaded restricts airflow long before it looks full, which reduces suction at the nozzle while the motor works harder. The guidance is explicit about when this matters most: where a machine is used on both floors and delicate objects, the bag AND the filter are replaced before it touches anything sensitive, rather than at the point they are full.
