Conservation and specialist cleaning

What people who clean irreplaceable things do differently — and which of it a household can use.

What this area turns on

Conservation guidance asks a question no cleaning publication asks: should this be cleaned at all? The textile leaflet puts it directly, alongside a note that stains may reflect the history or use of an object. The rest of the difference is order rather than product. Identify the material and the finish before choosing anything; check structural condition before handling; test; apply a small measured amount to a defined area; discard the applicator rather than reusing it. Most of that is free, and most of it is what separates a recoverable mistake from a permanent one.

Where the obvious answer is wrong

Cases where the treatment that removes the problem is the treatment that ruins the surface it is on.

  • How do I get tarnish off silver-plated cutlery without wearing the plating through?

    That sentence is also the problem. Tarnish CONTAINS silver, so removing it always removes a little metal, and abrasive polishes carry corrosive acids as well as abrasive compounds. On solid silver that is a slow recurring cost. On plate the silver is only microns thick, so the same treatment is a countdown - and the museum sheet records how it ends: over-polishing plated silver removes the plating and exposes dull base metal that CAN BE MISTAKEN FOR TARNISH. The reader then polishes harder, on the one area with nothing left.

Assessed and found wanting

Widely repeated techniques in this area that the evidence does not support, or supports only in part.

  • The chemistry is real and it is the reason to be careful. Both conservation bodies read here rule out electrochemical cleaners, and on silver PLATE the stakes are highest.

  • The commonest cleaning problem that is not a cleaning problem. The tackiness is the plastic's own additive surfacing, and cleaning removes only what has already arrived.

    The conservation tool for anything small, fragile or irreplaceable. Its value is control: a measured amount, a defined area, then discarded.

  • Dusting

    Method

    The lowest-status task in cleaning and the one that prevents the most damage — because what is being removed is abrasive, hygroscopic and edible.

  • Replacing what cleaning and age removed. The leather trade fences it far more tightly than the market does, and its frequency is measured in months.

  • Not dry. Cleaning in a liquid that is not water, chosen because water is the thing that swells fibres, moves dyes and felts wool.

  • Metal polish

    Cleaning agent

    A very fine abrasive with a mild chemical assist. Every use removes metal, which is why polishing a plated or antique item is a one-way decision.

  • Every polish takes a little of the object away. On solid metal that is a slow cost; on a plated one it is a countdown, and the end of it looks like more tarnish.

  • Lacquered metal

    Material or surface

    Brass, copper or steel under a clear film applied to stop it tarnishing. Every metal polish sold for the metal underneath attacks the film instead.

  • Sterling silver

    Material or surface

    92.5% silver, and the only material here where the standard domestic treatment permanently removes some of the object. Tarnish contains silver, so cleaning it off costs silver.

  • Silver plate

    Material or surface

    A microns-thin layer of silver over a base metal. Everything that cleans sterling also thins the plating, and once it is through there is nothing underneath to polish.

  • Household plastics

    Material or surface

    The catch-all for the polymer surfaces in every room. Solvents do not clean them, they dissolve them — and the same word covers a dozen different polymers.

  • The tacky film on an old remote, torch or camera grip is not dirt. It is the plastic's own additive arriving at the surface, which is why cleaning it off works briefly.

  • A great many surfaces are a thin layer over something else entirely. Once you know how thin, most compatibility questions answer themselves.
