Jute is a bast fibre, spun and woven into rugs, natural-fibre floor coverings and — historically and still — the backing of woven carpet. Being plant-based it carries sugars and lignin inside its cell walls, and that is the whole of its cleaning behaviour. Wet it, let it dry slowly, and those compounds migrate to the surface and oxidise into a yellow to brown discolouration. The mark did not arrive from outside; the fibre produced it. A water ring on a jute-backed rug is browning rather than a stain that failed to come out, and both get confused with wicking, which is soil returning rather than fibre coming forward. A professional body names jute when defining the effect and says not to attempt correction yourself — the chemistry that reverses browning strips dye if misjudged. Everything practical follows. Dry soil removal is the routine, because it introduces no water. Where water is unavoidable, use as little as possible and dry FAST — ventilation does more here than any product. And a jute-backed rug should not sit on a damp floor, because slow drying is the exact condition the discolouration needs.
