Plant-based fibres — cotton, linen, jute, and the jute backings under older carpet — contain sugars and lignin inside the cell walls. Wet the fibre and dry it SLOWLY, and those compounds migrate to the surface and oxidise there, leaving a yellow to brown discolouration.
