In detail
Being liftable is the whole difference. A rug can be taken outside, turned over and dried FAST, and speed of drying decides whether a plant-fibre rug browns after it gets wet. Jute and cotton release sugars and lignin to the surface when they dry slowly, leaving a yellow-brown mark no cleaning removes — so with a rug, unlike a fitted carpet, the reader holds the one control that prevents it. What sits underneath matters twice. A rug laid on fitted carpet stops the covered area getting air, and where the carpet's latex contains an antioxidant the result is phenolic yellowing in the exact outline of the rug — a mark the carpet made itself, which responds to moving the rug and waiting rather than to any product. On a hard floor the same absence of airflow keeps moisture in. Routine care is the standing textile sequence with one addition. Dry soil removal first and often, because tracked grit acts like sandpaper in a pile walked on from every direction rather than in traffic lanes. Turn it end to end so wear spreads. And where a spill soaked to the backing, expect the mark to reappear as it dries — that is wicking, and the answer is patience and absorbent weight, not more water.
