A steam iron heats water into steam inside a small boiler and pushes it through the soleplate, and everything that goes wrong with one is a scale problem or a residue problem. The manufacturer's own account is the clearest available: the harder the water in the area, the faster scale impurities develop and solidify, and the consequences are brown stains, brown water and leaking. Their descaling routine is worth knowing because of what it does not contain. Fill the tank with water, heat to maximum with steam off, unplug, hold the soleplate horizontal over a sink, activate the calc-clean function, and shake gently until water, steam and scale come out of the steam vents. Some model families instead have a physical scale collector that is removed, emptied, rinsed and refitted while the appliance is cool. No chemical is added at any point.
