Several iron families are built with a physical scale collector rather than relying on a flush cycle, and it changes the maintenance question completely. The manufacturer describes three arrangements: a container released at the base of the iron, a collector that pulls out from below the soleplate, and a built-in calc container. In each case the routine is the same and needs no chemistry — unplug the appliance and let it cool, remove the collector, empty and rinse it under water, wipe away any scale or residue around the opening, refit it and lock it in place. The interval given is once a month, or more if necessary. This is the clearest illustration in the catalogue of an appliance designed so that a descaling agent is unnecessary, which is the context in which the same manufacturer's prohibition on vinegar and descaling agents should be read: the substance is not merely discouraged, it has been designed out. Two practical points. A collector left unemptied simply returns the scale to the water circuit, and a collector refitted while wet or not locked home is the usual cause of an iron that leaks afterwards.
