A soleplate is a coated or polished metal plate held at up to two hundred degrees and pressed against textiles, so what accumulates on it is a mixture of melted synthetic fibre, starch and finishing products from the fabric, and mineral deposits carried out of the steam vents. Each of those transfers back onto the next garment, which is why a dirty soleplate is a laundry problem rather than an appearance one. The manufacturer's own routine after descaling is the useful one and it is mechanical: heat the iron and glide it over a cloth to clean the soleplate. That works because the deposits soften at ironing temperature and are picked up by the cloth. What must not be used is anything abrasive, because the plate is usually coated — ceramic, non-stick or an anodised finish — and a scratch in the coating drags on fabric permanently. Melted synthetic fibre is the hardest case and the one most likely to prompt a scraper; it is best softened by heat and removed with a wooden or plastic edge. The steam vents are a separate problem, and the manufacturer's descaling routine rather than a cotton bud is what clears them.
