Residue is the failure mode of cleaning itself, and it is the reason a surface can get dirtier the more often it is cleaned. Surfactants and builders left in a fibre or on a surface remain sticky and hygroscopic, so they catch and hold soil that would otherwise not adhere. The carpet institute gives the phenomenon its own section rather than a footnote: many spot removal solutions leave residues that attract soil, and the instruction is to rinse several times with lukewarm water, using a mist sprayer to avoid overwetting, and never to exceed the stated concentrations. Its rule about detergent strength — never use a stronger concentration — is a residue rule rather than a damage one. Two consequences follow that surprise people. A carpet or sofa cleaned badly resoils faster than one never cleaned. And a surface that films over or looks dull after cleaning is usually carrying residue rather than needing a stronger product. The diagnostic sign is a stain family of its own: the same database opens both its soap-residue and its yellowing entries with a vinegar solution, because what is being removed is alkaline residue rather than soil.
