An emulsion of oil, pigment and often silicone, formulated to stay put on skin. Two of those three need different treatments, in the right order.

Protein and fat in water, and the reason a dried milk spill smells long after the mark has gone is that the protein is still there.

A sofa is an upholstery problem, and upholstery is unusual in that the manufacturer has already decided what may be used on it — the cleaning code on the label distinguishes fabrics that may be cleaned with water, those that need a solvent, those that accept either, and those that may only be vacuumed. Nothing general about the fibre overrides that, because the code accounts for the backing, the adhesive and the filling as well as the face cloth. Two independent care documents in this register agree on the routine and on the prohibition. Normal cleaning is vacuuming with an upholstery attachment, and a vacuum attachment with a rotary brush must not be used, because brushing may permanently damage the nap or change the character of the fabric — the leather institute says the same thing about a rotating brush on leather. One manufacturer's panel and workspace fabrics carry two categorical restrictions worth knowing about any unlabelled fabric: do not apply water or any liquid solution, and do not use steam. Its spot-cleaning instruction is counter-intuitive and useful — soak up the stain immediately with a soft absorbent cloth and do not dry the stain completely, because it may set.
