In detail
An armrest wears differently from a seat cushion, and understanding why decides the method. Seats take spills and compression; arms take hands, forearms and heads, so what accumulates is sebum, hand cream and hair products transferred by contact over months. Because it arrives continuously and evenly, nobody sees it happen — the arm is noticed only when a cushion is turned or a cover removed and the difference in colour appears. That deposit is oily, which means water alone does nothing and a general spray does very little. The manufacturers' constraints still govern: vacuum with an upholstery attachment and never a rotary brush, check the cleaning code before any liquid, and on the fabrics one manufacturer covers, water or any liquid solution must not be applied at all and steam must not be used. Where a water-based method is permitted, a mild detergent solution applied to a white cloth and worked from the outside in is the route, and the whole panel should be treated rather than the darkest patch, because a locally cleaned area on a uniformly soiled arm reads as a new mark. Arm caps exist precisely because this is predictable.
