The dark, sharply defined bands that appear where carpet meets a skirting board, under a door that stays shut at night, beneath floor-length curtains and around floor outlets and heating ducts. It looks like neglect and is not: wherever air passes between the room and the space under or behind the floor, the pile filters it. What it catches is far finer than ordinary soil — combustion particulate from candles and cooking, traffic soot, dust below the size a cloth meets. That fineness is why it embeds deep in the fibre rather than resting on it, and why domestic cleaning does not touch it. Removal needs professional chemistry, may be incomplete, and is exceptionally difficult on wool or olefin. The honest household answer is prevention, and it is structural rather than chemical. The line marks an air path, so sealing gaps between floor and wall during any flooring work removes the cause. Changing ventilation filters, using a vacuum's edging tool along skirting boards, and burning fewer candles all reduce what the carpet is being asked to filter.
