In detail

Olefin is polypropylene spun as a fibre, used widely in carpet, rugs and outdoor textiles. Its defining property for cleaning is one no other fibre here has: a professional body describes it as BLEACH-PROOF, and recommends it for laundry rooms and areas near swimming pools for exactly that reason. Where chlorine bleach takes the colour out of almost every other textile permanently — correctable only by dyeing or patching — olefin keeps it, because the colour is in the polymer rather than applied to it. That does not make it robust. It is a polyolefin, so it is OLEOPHILIC: oily soil is chemically similar to the fibre and is held tenaciously, which is why olefin carpets look greasy in traffic lanes while resisting water-based stains. Solvent has to be used carefully for the same reason. And it is one of the two fibres a professional body names as exceptionally hard to clear of filtration soiling, the fine airborne particulate that embeds at room edges. So the sequence inverts. On most textiles the water-based stain is the easy one and bleach is the catastrophe; on olefin bleach is survivable and the body oil from bare feet is the problem.
