One of the four variables in every cleaning process, and the one people reach for when the other three are wrong. More force is rarely the missing ingredient.
In detail
Cleaning trades off four things: chemistry, temperature, time and mechanical action. Reducing one usually means increasing another, which is why a cool wash needs a better detergent and a longer soak needs less scrubbing. Agitation is the variable a person controls directly and therefore the one they increase when something is not working, and it is the one most likely to damage the surface rather than the soil. The sources are consistent about where its limits are. The carpet institute instructs working the solution in gently and explicitly not rubbing, working from the edges of a spill inwards to prevent spreading. A furniture manufacturer and the leather institute both prohibit brushing and rotary-brush vacuum attachments, because brushing permanently changes a napped surface. The aluminium standard warns against excessive abrasive rubbing, which produces an undesirable appearance even without visible scratching. The wool trade makes the same point with a different tool: heavy pressure makes a sweater shiny, which is burnishing rather than a heat mark. Where agitation helps, it is usually more contact time at low force.
