In detail

Products sold specifically for glass-ceramic hobs are creams containing a very fine mineral abrasive, a surfactant and usually a silicone or polymer that is left behind as a thin film. Understanding the two halves explains both why they outperform general sprays and where their limits are. The abrasive is fine enough to remove bonded residue without hazing the glass-ceramic, which a general scouring cream is not — the difference is particle hardness and size rather than marketing. The film is the underrated part: it reduces adhesion for the next spill, which is why a hob that is treated regularly is easier to clean each time. What no product changes is the appliance's constraints. Sugar is the exception to the clean-it-cold rule and must come off while the surface is warm, because it bonds as it cools. The cooker manufacturer excludes steel wool, abrasives, ammonia and oven cleaner from the metal and painted parts, and states that the enamel is acid-resistant rather than acid-proof.
