Hair straightener

A ceramic-coated plate that gets to 230°C and collects burnt styling product. The manufacturer's cleaning section is three lines, and the water instruction in it is not the water instruction elsewhere in the same manual.

Precautions

  • Disconnect from the power supply first
  • Do not apply to a hot surface
  • Check the manufacturer's instructions

In detail

Product build-up on a straightener is heat-set: hairspray and serum are baked onto the plate rather than deposited on it, which is why wiping a cold styler with a dry cloth does nothing. The manufacturer's cleaning section is short and specific. Unplug the appliance and allow it to cool. Wipe all the surfaces WITH A DAMP CLOTH. Do not use harsh or abrasive cleaning agents, or SOLVENTS. That is the whole of it, and two of the three lines are things not to do. The damp cloth is worth dwelling on, because it appears to contradict the same manual's safeguards — do not use this appliance near bathtubs, showers or basins, and unplug it after use in a bathroom because the proximity of water is a hazard EVEN WHEN IT IS SWITCHED OFF. Both are true and they are about different moments. Water near a live appliance is the hazard; a wrung-out cloth on an unplugged, cold one is the instruction. Order and state are doing the work. One further warning belongs to cleaning even though it is filed under use: hairsprays contain flammable material and are not to be used while the product is in use. The residue is combustible before it is unsightly.
