A grill pan and its grid arrive together, are used together and are washed together, and the manufacturer's instructions for them differ on the single most consequential point. The broiler pan may be cleaned with a commercial oven cleaner; do NOT use an oven cleaner on the grid. No reason is given for the difference. What can be said is that the distinction is stated for two parts of one accessory, which is about as clear a demonstration as there is that 'the same thing' is not one cleaning problem. The rest is shared. Both are washed in hot water with a soap-filled or plastic scouring pad, and both may go in the dishwasher. Both may be put through the self-clean cycle, but excess grease must be cleaned off first, because self-cleaning a greasy pan produces heavy smoke. For food burned onto the grid the method is time rather than force: sprinkle it with detergent while still hot and cover with wet paper towels or a dishcloth, because soaking removes burned-on food. One instruction is about storage rather than cleaning and is easy to overlook — do not store a soiled pan and grid anywhere in the range.
