In detail

The glass in a stove door is a glass-ceramic chosen for thermal shock resistance, and it is the part of the appliance owners most want to keep clear. It blackens because wood smoke deposits carbon along with condensed tars, and the deposit bakes on. Carbon does not dissolve in anything available domestically, so the deposit is removed mechanically, which makes stove glass unusual: on most surfaces a fine abrasive is a compromise, and here it is the appropriate treatment, because the glass is considerably harder than the deposit and harder than the mild abrasives used on it. Two constraints matter more than the choice of cleaner. The glass must be cold, since applying anything wet to hot glass risks thermal shock and puts the user at risk of burns. And the rope seal around the panel is fragile and should not be soaked or scrubbed. Persistent heavy blackening is a signal rather than a chore — it usually indicates wet fuel, too little air or a stove run too cool, and correcting the burn is more effective than any cleaning method.

Where the sources disagree

Stove glass guidance prohibits abrasive cleaners and recommends ash, which is an abrasive. Which applies?

The two statements use the word 'abrasive' to mean different things, and once that is seen the contradiction disappears. The prohibition is about materials harder than the glass — grit-loaded scouring creams, metal and nylon scouring pads, blades and scrapers — which cut the surface. The recommendation is about a specific powder that is softer than glass-ceramic and harder than baked carbon, which is the exact relationship that lets an abrasive remove a deposit without marking what is underneath. HETAS makes the boundary explicit in the same article by warning separately against large remnants in the ash: coarse unburnt fragments are the hard particles the prohibition is about, and they arrive mixed into the very material being recommended.

What to do: Use fine ash, sieved or taken from the fine layer rather than scooped with clinker in it, on cool glass, and stop if you feel grit. The prohibition on abrasives is not overridden by the ash technique — it is the reason the ash has to be fine.

Do stove manufacturers agree that ash should be used on their glass?

This one is not a misreading. Two manufacturers have given different instructions for their own products, and the likeliest reason is visible in the second: printed glass. Where a door panel carries screen-printed decoration or a printed border, an abrasive that does not mark the glass will still abrade the print, and a manufacturer whose range includes printed panels has good reason to give one conservative instruction rather than a technique plus a caveat most owners will not read. Neither position is wrong for the appliance it addresses, and neither generalises to the other.

What to do: Check whether the glass is plain or printed, and follow the manual for your own stove. Where the manufacturer's instructions cover glass cleaning they govern, and they outrank both the general trade guidance and anything on this site. Where they are silent and the glass is plain, the ash technique is supported by HETAS and by at least one manufacturer.
