An extractor sprays cleaning solution into a carpet pile and immediately vacuums it back, along with the soil it has suspended. Professional guidance reaches for one first on any large liquid spill — get the liquid out before it reaches the backing — and a wet/dry vacuum does the same job for the initial pick-up of urine or a burst spill. The machine's limits are the interesting part and they explain most of what goes wrong afterwards. Extraction cannot remove everything: soil left at the base of the yarns and on the backing is exactly the reservoir that produces wicking as the carpet dries, and moisture that reaches the padding can sit there while the pile feels dry.
