In detail
Urine is a mixed soil — protein, urea, salts and pigment — and the reason it frustrates people is that the visible stain and the smell come apart. Remove the mark and the odour often stays, because the residues responsible for it have soaked into the backing, the underlay or the substrate below whatever was cleaned, where a surface treatment never reaches. That is a depth problem rather than a chemistry problem, and it is why odour returns in humid weather: moisture remobilises what was left behind. The carpet trade's procedure is the standard one, and it is worth noting what it does and does not promise: pretest in an inconspicuous area, blot rather than rub, work from the edges inwards, and keep using the first agent while the stain still transfers. Its named options include a vinegar solution and an ammonia solution, and it attaches an explicit caution to the latter — used improperly ammonia can cause a colour change, so a hidden area must be tested. CleaningHQ adds a caution the trade guidance does not: an ammonia solution on a surface that has had a bleach-based product on it is the documented route to chlorine gas in a home.

Where the sources disagree
A mattress has been stained. Cold water and mild soap only, or the trade body's warm detergent and solvent?
Part of this is scope and part of it is not. THE SOLVENT DIFFERENCE IS PARTLY SCOPE. The manufacturer writes for a range in which foam is usual, and foam has least tolerance for a solvent and no way to flush one out. The trade association writes across UK beds including sprung ones, and it does not ignore the problem — it attaches 'cautiously on foam' to the same instruction. The more foam is present, the closer its advice moves to the prohibition. THE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE IS NOT SCOPE. Warm and cold are not two readings of one instruction; they are opposite answers about the same sponge on the same stain, and no construction difference explains it. It is left standing. What neither disputes is the more useful part: act immediately, do not over-wet, and get the liquid out of the mattress's path first. Standing the mattress on its side is the only step in either document that changes the outcome rather than the appearance, and the manufacturer contradicts nothing in it.
What to do: Do the two things both bodies support first, because they are the ones that matter: strip the bedding and stand the mattress on its side so the spill stops travelling, then lift what you can with cold water and no flooding. After that, let the construction decide. On a foam or foam-topped mattress take the manufacturer's line — cold, mild soap, light, and no solvent at all. On a sprung mattress the trade association's warm detergent procedure is a credible body's published instruction and is available to you. Whichever you use, the limit is the same: what has soaked below the surface is not reachable by anything applied to the surface, which is why both documents end up recommending a protector rather than a technique.
