In detail
Steel wool is fine steel drawn into shavings, and it cuts. On the surfaces it is right for — bare cast iron, a seized fixing, some raw timber — nothing else works as quickly. On almost everything in a kitchen or bathroom it is the wrong tool for two separate reasons, and the second is less obvious than the first. The first is hardness: steel scratches stainless steel, chrome plating, glass-ceramic hobs, acrylic, enamel and glass, and stainless steel is not exempt simply because it is also steel. The second is contamination. Steel wool sheds particles, and particles left on a surface corrode, producing rust spots that look as though the surface itself has failed — this is the commonest cause of what people describe as a stainless steel sink that has started rusting. The stone trade makes the same point from another angle, warning that fine steel wool leaves iron in a porous stone which then stains it from within. Where fine abrasion really is needed, a non-metallic pad or a cream cleanser does the same job without leaving iron behind.
