How cleaning got here
Carbolic, cresols, quicklime and perchloroethylene — the substances domestic hygiene was built on, read from the hazard sheets rather than from nostalgia.
What this area turns on
Cleaning history is usually told as a history of products. The other half is who did the work: in February 1875 the House of Lords heard that a boy of fourteen had suffocated in a Cambridge flue, that the practice had already ended in London and Glasgow, and — the part that still matters — that the existing law was strong enough and magistrates simply would not convict. What finally ended it was licensing and enforcement rather than another prohibition. SPRINT 49 ADDED THE MACHINES. In 1901 an engineer watched a demonstration at London's Empire Music Hall of a device that BLEW dust off furniture, and saw the flaw — the dust came back down. His change was to pull it through a filter instead, and that single reversal is the whole difference between cleaning and redistributing, which this catalogue still relies on. The first machine was horse-drawn, petrol-powered, painted like a fire engine and worked by liveried operators feeding hoses through the windows, and one visit cost roughly a junior maid's ANNUAL WAGES. In the same decades a laundry catalogue was selling wringers whose second job was chemical rather than mechanical: they squeezed the suds back into the tub, because soap was expensive. A customer's own sentence measures what that was worth — washing that took three days could be finished by the same evening. The reason a particular smell still means clean is a number. The odour threshold for cresols — the coal-tar disinfectants that followed carbolic into British homes — is 0.0006 parts per million, the lowest figure in any regulator fact sheet this catalogue has read. The smell is detectable far below the concentration at which the substance is dangerous, so a house that smelled powerfully of disinfectant contained almost none of it. The association was learned from a molecule that was extremely easy to smell and, at that level, doing very little.

Hotter washes clean better

The body that devised the care-labelling system states the symbols mean the maximum severity the garment can take without irreversible damage. That is a specification, not caution.
It really is a strong alkaline degreaser, and two of its most-promoted uses are on materials that alkalis attack.

Carbolic acid
Cleaning agentWhere domestic disinfection began. A state health department rates it 4 for health — the top of its scale — and lists disinfectant among its uses in the same paragraph.
Cresol disinfectant
Cleaning agentWhat replaced carbolic in the household, and the reason a particular smell still means clean. Detectable at 0.0006 ppm — far below the level at which it is dangerous.
Quicklime
Cleaning agentPre-industrial sanitation in a bag. The regulator's long-term exposure paragraph reads as a description of the hands of everybody who used it.
Perchloroethylene
Cleaning agentThe solvent that made dry cleaning an industry, named as such in the first line of its own hazard sheet — and classed as a carcinogen in the same banner.
Soap
Cleaning agentThe original surfactant, and chemically not the same thing as detergent. In hard water it precipitates, which is where the film on a shower screen comes from.
Sodium carbonate
Cleaning agentA considerably stronger alkali than bicarbonate. Effective on grease and as a laundry builder, and damaging to aluminium, wool and painted surfaces.
Wood ash
Cleaning agentThe residue from a wood fire: a fine abrasive that is also mildly alkaline. The active ingredient in a long-standing stove-glass technique.
Sugar soap
Cleaning agentContains no sugar and, in most modern products, no soap. An alkaline pre-paint cleaner whose name is a description of what it looked like, not what it is.
Dry cleaning
MethodNot dry. Cleaning in a liquid that is not water, chosen because water is the thing that swells fibres, moves dyes and felts wool.
Saponification
ScienceAn alkali reacting with a fat to make soap. It is how soap is manufactured, and it is also how oven cleaner removes baked-on grease.
Three different things routinely sold as one. Cleaning removes soil, disinfecting kills micro-organisms, and each is largely ineffective without the other.
Ash and water on stove glass
Claim or techniqueThe traditional method for clearing soot from a stove door. The UK approval body and at least one manufacturer both recommend it directly.
Cleaning has always transferred risk from the thing being cleaned to the person cleaning it. The history of the trade is largely a record of who absorbed that transfer.
Chimney sweeping
MethodNot housekeeping. A fire-safety interval set by the fuel burned, and work for a competent sweep rather than the householder.
Soot
Stain or problemCarbon particles from incomplete combustion. Largely inert, so it is lifted dry rather than dissolved — and disturbing it dry is itself an exposure.
Carpet beater
EquipmentHow floors were cleaned before suction, and a working demonstration of the one variable a vacuum still depends on.
Mangle and wringer
EquipmentTwo rollers that did chemistry as well as labour: they squeezed the suds back into the tub, and soap was expensive.
Vacuum cleaner
