A laminate worktop is a thin decorative paper impregnated with melamine resin, pressed over a chipboard or MDF core and edged with a matching strip. The wear surface is genuinely hard, resistant to most household chemicals and easy to clean with a neutral detergent. Its weaknesses are structural rather than chemical, and all of them are about what is underneath. Water that reaches the core through a cut-out around a sink, a failed edge strip or a lifted seam swells the chipboard permanently and no drying reverses it. Heat lifts the bond between the laminate and the core, which is why a hot pan leaves a blister rather than a scorch. Solvents attack the printed layer where it has been worn thin — the regulator's own sheets note that acetone dissolves resins and plastics, and a nail polish spill on a laminate worktop is one of the commonest ways one is ruined. And abrasives dull the finish irreversibly, because the decorative layer has a defined thickness and there is nothing beneath it but paper. The practical rule is that damage on laminate is not repairable, so prevention at the joints and around the sink is where the effort belongs.
