Most of a wood-burning stove's visible bulk, and a great deal of domestic metalwork besides, is steel carrying a paint or powder-coat finish. The distinction that matters is that the cleaning question is about the coating, not about the steel: whatever the metal underneath tolerates is irrelevant while the paint is intact, and once the paint is gone the appearance cannot be restored by cleaning at all. On alkalis this is not an inference — a US state hazardous substance fact sheet states plainly that sodium hydroxide attacks coatings, alongside iron, copper, plastics and rubber, which is why caustic oven and drain products carry the warnings they do about surrounding surfaces. Two further risks are recorded here as CleaningHQ's own reasoning rather than as sourced claims, and are labelled as such: stove paint is a thin matt heat-resistant finish that abrasives burnish or remove, and solvents including alcohols can soften or lift organic coatings.
