Modern vehicle paint is a base coat carrying the colour under a transparent clear coat that provides the gloss, the ultraviolet protection and all of the chemical resistance. The clear coat is on the order of forty to fifty microns thick, and understanding that number explains most of what happens to car paintwork. Bird droppings, tree sap, insect residue and egg do not merely sit on the surface — they are acidic or alkaline enough to etch into the clear coat, particularly in sun, and what is left after the deposit is removed is a dished mark in the film rather than a stain on it. That is why washing removes the deposit and not the ring. Machine polishing removes clear coat to level the surface around the etch, which works and is finite: there is only so much film to give. Two habits do most of the damage. Wiping a dry, dusty panel drags grit across the clear coat, which is where swirl marks come from. And washing in direct sun leaves cleaner drying on hot paint — the same reason a standards body forbids cleaning hot, sun-heated aluminium, where reactions accelerate unevenly and streak the finish beyond restoring.
