What should I use on red wine spilled on a wool carpet or jumper?
A different kind of treatment works
Change the mechanism from oxidation to dilution and dissolution, and respect the order. The wool body gives red wine, fruit and fruit juice their own entry and its sequence is three steps. Finish with a wash in an approved wool detergent. Where the label permits dry cleaning and the mark survives, tell the cleaner what the stain is AND what has already been applied to it — a treated stain is a different problem from an untreated one.
Why the usual answer works
Oxygen bleach is the standard domestic answer to red wine and it is a good one on the right fibre. It works by oxidation, breaking the conjugated bonds in the anthocyanin pigments that give wine its colour so that they stop absorbing visible light. The mark does not move — it stops being visible. That is why it is sold for exactly this and why a reader reaches for it.
Usually recommended: Sodium percarbonate (oxygen bleach).
Why it must not be used here
Wool is a protein fibre and oxidising bleaches attack it directly, degrading the keratin rather than the stain sitting on it. The damage is structural and it is not a mark that can be cleaned off afterwards: the fibre is weakened, and on a carpet the affected area wears differently from everything around it. The wool body approaches this from the other side, warning that methods aimed primarily at cotton or synthetic garments are not all suitable for wool.
This damage cannot be undone by cleaning. There is nothing left on the surface to remove.

- Blotting — Lifting a spill straight up into an absorbent cloth rather than working at it. The opposite of what almost everyone does, and the trade bodies are explicit about why.
- Wool detergent — A mild, near-neutral detergent without enzymes or bleach. What the wool industry body recommends, and what it recommends against is the more useful half.
- Isopropyl alcohol — A solvent that dissolves oils and residues and evaporates without a trace. Useful on electronics and glass; flammable, and damaging to some plastics and finishes.
- Solvent wiping — Dissolving an oily soil and letting the solvent evaporate. The answer where water would leave a mark or cause harm.

This is a case where a specialist is a reasonable answer. Restoring a surface is a different trade from cleaning it, and continuing to try cleaning products on damage generally makes the eventual restoration harder.
The chemistry behind both halves
- Oxidation and bleaching — Bleaches do not lift stains out — they destroy the part of the molecule that carries the colour. Nothing is removed, so nothing is selective.
- Protein denaturation — Heat unfolds a protein and binds it to the fibre. It is the one place in cleaning where the universal instinct — hotter is better — makes the problem permanent.
