In detail

Grout is the material between tiles, and for cleaning purposes there are two kinds that behave nothing alike. Cementitious grout — the common one — is porous and absorbs stains, and its governing chemical property is that cement is alkaline based and is dissolved by acids. The tile trade draws the practical conclusion directly: clean grout with an alkaline cleaner rather than an acid-based one, because acids attack the cement itself. That is awkward, because grout lines in a shower collect precisely the two things people reach for acid to remove — limescale and soap scum — and an acidic product used routinely on grout is slowly dissolving it rather than cleaning it. Epoxy grout is a different material, described by the same trade body as virtually as stain-proof as the tile. Sealing helps with absorption but is not a transformation: a penetrating sealer is usually vapour permeable and does not change the surface texture, so stains can still be harder to remove from grout than from tile. Can I use a limescale remover on the grout in my shower?

Cementitious grout is alkaline based and is dissolved by acids — the tile trade states this plainly and draws the conclusion itself, that manufacturers do not advocate acids because they attack the cement in the grout. Grout is also porous, so an acidic product does not merely touch the surface. The damage is gradual and looks like wear rather than like chemical attack, which is why it is rarely attributed to the cleaner that caused it.

A different kind of treatment works: Use an alkaline cleaner rather than an acidic one. This is the tile trade's stated preference for grout, and it has the convenient property of matching what the other common soil in a shower actually needs — soap scum and body oils are greasy soils that respond to alkali and surfactancy, not to acid. Where the grout is epoxy rather than cementitious the constraint does not apply in the same way, since epoxy grout is described as virtually as stain-proof as the tile, but check which you have before assuming. As with stone, drying the surface after use does more than any product: the deposit forms when hard water evaporates in place.

Should chlorine bleach be used on household mould, and at what dilution?

All three make PHYSICAL REMOVAL with detergent and water the actual method. None presents bleach as the way mould is cleaned. What they differ on is whether an optional kill step afterwards earns its place — and the answer tracks the WATER, not the mould. Where the water was clean, the bleach step is merely offered and the federal guide declines to recommend it; where it was floodwater or sewage, both bodies that give dilutions positively recommend it, because the concern has shifted from mould to what else the water carried. The federal guide's reason for declining is not that bleach fails: it is that killing without removing leaves an allergenic residue, and that a background level of spores is normal once the area is dry.

What to do: Fix the water first — every source says the mould returns otherwise. Then remove the growth physically, scrubbing hard surfaces with detergent and water and drying completely; that is the method all three bodies give. Porous material that has grown mould — carpet, plasterboard, insulation, ceiling tiles — is discarded rather than treated, by every source read. If you add a bleach step on a hard surface afterwards, that is a position two public bodies support and one declines to recommend; use the conditions they all agree on: dilute, ventilate, gloves and unvented eye protection, and never mix bleach with ammonia, with acids such as vinegar, or with any other product. Mould over about ten square feet, or after flooding or sewage, is not a cleaning job.
