Finished leather is a hide with a water-based surface finish on it, and that finish is what most shoe-care products were not formulated for. The leather institute's prohibition list is long and mostly counter-intuitive: never use any high-pH cleaner, anything containing abrasives, anything containing alcohol or butyl cellosolve, any strong solvent, saddle soap, mink oil, wax, furniture polish, glass cleaner, or caustic household cleaners such as soap or dish detergent. The stated reason is that these vary widely in strength and in compatibility with today's water-based leather finishes, and may cause cracking or other damage. Technique carries as much weight as product. Cleaning begins with vacuuming and never a rotating brush. Cleaner goes onto a clean white cotton rag rather than onto the leather, and is wiped on in a circular motion under moderate pressure — with a memorable limit on force: no more than that of a firm handshake, because scrubbing damages the leather and makes a stain harder to remove. Leather is air dried, never heated, and deep cleaning with conditioning is needed only every four to six months.
