The fridge gasket is the same shape of problem as a washing machine door seal, which has been measured in a study: a folded rubber strip whose geometry is the whole story. The fold that makes it seal also collects crumbs and holds moisture, and both of those things live in the dark against food. The manufacturer's instruction is short and has three parts, and the third is the one that gets skipped. Clean the gasket with a damp cloth and mild soap. Lift the folds gently to get the crumbs out — a soft brush or an old toothbrush reaches where a cloth does not. And DRY IT FULLY afterwards, because the guidance ties drying to keeping a tight seal rather than to appearance. What must not go near it is the same list that applies to the plastic liners, and gaskets are named on it explicitly: no abrasive or harsh cleaners, no window sprays, no scouring cleansers, no concentrated detergents, and no BLEACHES. That last one matters because a mouldy-looking seal is exactly the surface a reader reaches for bleach on.
