Ground quartz bound in resin. Non-porous and acid-tolerant where marble is not — but the resin is the weak point, and the products sold for real stone are wrong for it.

In detail

Engineered quartz is crushed natural quartz held in a polymer resin, and almost every practical difference from natural stone comes from the resin rather than the mineral. Quartz is hard and chemically indifferent; the binder is neither, so the failure mode inverts. Marble is destroyed by acid and tolerates a stone soap; engineered quartz shrugs off the acid that would etch marble and is damaged instead by what attacks polymers. The manufacturer's prohibited list is accordingly solvents and extremes: oven and grill cleaners, dishwasher detergent, floor strippers, oil soaps, paint removers and strippers, anything containing trichloroethane or methylene chloride, and chemicals of high or low pH. The trap worth knowing is the one most readers walk into — the guidance explicitly warns against wipes and cleaners sold for granite, marble and other natural stones. A worktop that looks like stone, is sold in the stone aisle and fitted by a stone mason is not stone, and the product bought to care for it is formulated for a material it is not made of. Routine cleaning is warm soapy water, hot pans belong on a trivet, and anything harsh that reaches the surface is rinsed off immediately.
