In detail

Vitreous enamel is a glassy layer fired onto cast iron or steel, and it behaves like glass rather than like the metal beneath it — hard, chemically tolerant, and permanently marked by anything harder than itself. The manufacturer's position on enamelled cast-iron baths is that harsh abrasive cleaners used regularly will scratch and destroy the surface, and where a stubborn stain genuinely requires an abrasive it should be used sparingly and NEVER without water. That last qualification is the useful part and it generalises: an abrasive carried in water is lubricated and cuts less, while the same powder used dry concentrates its work in exactly the way that leaves visible scratching. Steel wool and abrasive sponge pads are excluded in favour of a soft nylon brush, and the routine is rinsing thoroughly and drying with a soft cloth after use. The reason to take a scratch seriously on enamel rather than treating it as cosmetic is what is underneath: once the glassy layer is breached the exposed iron can corrode, and the damage progresses from beneath a coating that cannot be re-fired in place.

    When the obvious answer is wrong

    Can I use oven cleaner on the burnt-on mess in my self-cleaning oven?

    The manufacturer prohibits it in absolute terms: no commercial oven cleaner or oven liner protective coating of any kind should be used in or around any part of the oven. The mechanism is delayed rather than immediate. RESIDUE FROM OVEN CLEANERS WILL DAMAGE THE INSIDE OF THE OVEN WHEN THE SELF-CLEAN CYCLE IS USED — so the harm happens later, at pyrolytic temperature, to whatever the cleaner left behind. Someone who sprays, wipes and sees nothing wrong has not shown the practice is safe; they have postponed the test. The same guide notes that even soap left on the liner causes additional stains when the oven is heated.

    A different kind of treatment works: Use the mechanism the appliance already has. The manufacturer's own procedure is the self-clean cycle itself: remove the broiler pan, grid and other cookware first, wipe up excess spillage before starting, and afterwards wipe the white ash away with a damp cloth once the oven has cooled. Clean only the parts the guide lists. The door needs three different treatments and they must not be confused — the gasket is not cleaned at all, because it is essential to the seal and must not be rubbed, damaged or moved; the area outside the gasket may take a scouring pad; and the door exterior must not meet oven cleaners, cleansing powders or harsh abrasives. Where a spill is bad enough to want chemistry between cycles, the honest answer from this guidance is to wipe up spillage promptly instead, because the cycle is the cleaning method the oven was designed around.
