In detail
A frame is finished tubing — painted steel or aluminium, lacquered carbon, or anodised metal — and its cleaning problem is abrasion rather than chemistry. The trade documentation's approach is deliberately gentle: a large soft-bristle brush with soapy water on the tubing, and a tapered detail brush for the tight spots behind the bottom bracket, around the derailleur and under the saddle, which are where road spray collects and where a cloth cannot reach. Its most transferable observation is about grit rather than about product: dirt trapped between a repair-stand clamp jaw and the paint may mar the finish, while the jaw itself does not scratch. That is the same mechanism the glass trade names — abrasive particles trapped between the surface and the tool — and it is the reason the frame is washed after the drivetrain rather than before, and rinsed generously rather than wiped. Two closing details from the same source. Rinsing is done with a water bottle or a hose at low pressure with a wide spray, never a jet. And hand-drying with a towel is recommended not for appearance but because it catches soap that was not rinsed off and gives an opportunity to inspect the frame for damage.
