One appliance with three surfaces that need opposite treatment, and a maintenance task that is a fire-safety requirement rather than housekeeping.
What this area turns on
Advice given at the level of 'the stove' is necessarily wrong about part of it: the body is heat-resistant paint that abrasives mark, the door is ceramic glass where a fine abrasive is the standard treatment, and the ash bed is not simply dirt. The interval that matters is not a cleaning one at all — the approval body sets sweeping by FUEL, at least twice a year burning wood and at least once on smokeless, timed before the season and after its peak, and it is work for a competent sweep.

Wood-burning stove
Thing to cleanA solid-fuel appliance whose parts need genuinely different treatment: painted steel body, ceramic glass door, and a firebox that should mostly be left alone.
Stove glass
ComponentThe ceramic glass panel in a stove door. Blackens with soot and tar, and is one of the few surfaces where a fine abrasive is the standard answer.
Soot
Stain or problemCarbon particles from incomplete combustion. Largely inert, so it is lifted dry rather than dissolved — and disturbing it dry is itself an exposure.
Creosote
Stain or problemNot a kind of soot. A flammable tar condensed from damp, oxygen-starved wood burning — and the hardest forms do not answer to a brush at all.
Wood ash
Cleaning agentThe residue from a wood fire: a fine abrasive that is also mildly alkaline. The active ingredient in a long-standing stove-glass technique.
Ash and water on stove glass
Claim or techniqueThe traditional method for clearing soot from a stove door. The UK approval body and at least one manufacturer both recommend it directly.
Chimney sweeping
MethodNot housekeeping. A fire-safety interval set by the fuel burned, and work for a competent sweep rather than the householder.
Painted and coated steel
Material or surfaceA coating rather than a metal, and the coating decides everything. Strong alkalis attack coatings directly; abrasives and solvents are the other two risks.
Ceramic glass
Material or surfaceThe heat-resistant glass used in stove doors and ceramic hobs. Chemically robust and thermally tough, but readily scratched, and scratches are permanent.
Mild abrasion
