Four floor types whose shared enemy is water reaching somewhere it was never meant to go.
What this area turns on
Three of these four floors are damaged by moisture rather than by any cleaner, and always at a joint or a fibre rather than on the surface you can see. The European laminate producers state without qualification that steam cleaners are not suitable for any type of laminate floor, because the wood-based core swells; the wood flooring and carpet associations both say to blot a spill rather than rub it, for the same reason in two different materials. The failure is structural and it is not reversible by cleaning.
Where the obvious answer is wrong
Cases where the treatment that removes the problem is the treatment that ruins the surface it is on.
Can I use a limescale remover on the grout in my shower?
Cementitious grout is alkaline based and is dissolved by acids — the tile trade states this plainly and draws the conclusion itself, that manufacturers do not advocate acids because they attack the cement in the grout. Grout is also porous, so an acidic product does not merely touch the surface. The damage is gradual and looks like wear rather than like chemical attack, which is why it is rarely attributed to the cleaner that caused it.

Using a limescale remover on shower grout
Does not workIt removes the scale and dissolves the grout. Cement is alkaline, and the tile trade says acids attack it — which is what most bathroom products are.
Steam mops are safe on sealed wood floors
Does not workSteam mops are marketed for wood floors and sold in the flooring aisle. The wood flooring trade association rules them out entirely.
Scrub a carpet stain to get it out
Does not workThe instinctive response to a spill, and the one the carpet trade association specifically prohibits. Scrubbing damages the carpet itself.
Mould needs bleach
Does not workThe environmental regulator does not recommend biocides as routine, directs detergent and water, and says the part everyone misses: killing mould is not enough, because it must also be removed.
Hot water for a blood stain
Does not workThe instinct is that hot water cleans better. On this one stain it is precisely the wrong move, and it is not recoverable.
A stronger solution cleans better
Does not workThe trade body that publishes carpet stain procedures puts this in capitals: NEVER USE A STRONGER CONCENTRATION. That is a claim about damage, not about thrift.
Steam mopping a laminate floor
Does not workThe European laminate producers' technical bulletin has one categorical sentence and this is it: steam cleaners are not suitable for use with any type of laminate floor.
Sensible-sounding, and the carpet trade's own entry for mud recommends no drying-out period at all.
Using laundry detergent on a carpet stain
Does not workExcluded outright by the carpet trade, and the reason it now gives is one nobody guesses: optical brighteners.
All-purpose cleaner on a vinyl floor

Laminate flooring
Material or surfaceA wood-based board under a resin surface. The board is why water is the enemy, and why the trade body rules out steam without qualification.
Finished wood flooring
Material or surfaceThe finish is the surface, not the wood — and the two things that ruin it are water and the cleaners people reach for to remove water marks.
Carpet
Material or surfaceA textile floor covering where the instinctive response to a spill — scrubbing — is the one the trade body specifically rules out.
Porcelain tile
Material or surfaceThe trade defines porcelain by a number: water absorption of 0.5% or less. That number is why one tile stains and another does not.
Grout
Material or surfaceCement-based grout is porous and alkaline, and acids dissolve it. That single fact rules out most of what bathroom cleaning advice recommends for it.
Blotting
MethodLifting a spill straight up into an absorbent cloth rather than working at it. The opposite of what almost everyone does, and the trade bodies are explicit about why.
Solvents and polymers
ScienceA solvent cannot tell a soil from a surface made of similar stuff. Most modern surfaces are polymers, which is what makes this the commonest way to ruin one.
Dry soil removal
MethodTaking the loose material away before any liquid touches it. Skipped almost universally, and it is the step that decides whether the rest works.
Fibre swelling and shrinkage
ScienceWashing swells the fibre and drying deswells it. Shrinkage is a fabric travelling toward a fixed relaxed state — not a process that continues forever.
