A freezer is a preservation environment rather than a sterile one: low temperature slows microbial activity and chemical change without stopping either, so spills, packaging residues and odours accumulate and persist. The practical consequences differ from a fridge's. Defrosting is the real cleaning event, because ice build-up traps whatever spilled beneath it and because a thick ice layer also costs efficiency and space. Warm water and a mild detergent are the appropriate cleaner; the refrigerator manufacturer's guidance for the interior of a cold appliance directs a mild solution and warns against abrasive and harsh cleaners on the liner and the seals, and the liner in most freezers is a plastic that solvents craze. The door seal deserves specific attention, because a seal held slightly open by ice or debris runs the appliance continuously. Odour transfer is the other recurring complaint and it is a packaging problem rather than a cleaning one — cold air circulates volatile compounds between poorly wrapped items. Nothing should be scraped off the evaporator with a metal tool: puncturing it ends the appliance.
