In detail
The cassette is a stack of sprockets with narrow gaps between them, and those gaps collect a compacted mixture of old lubricant, road grit, grass and organic debris that a brush alone will not shift. The trade sequence handles it in two stages: scrape the larger debris out from between the gears with a toothed tool, then clean the cogs with a gear brush and solvent. What makes it a component record rather than part of the frame is where it sits. The cassette mounts directly over the rear hub, which contains sealed bearings whose grease is what the solvent would thin, and the documentation is specific enough to prescribe a posture — lean the wheel so the cogs face the ground, to minimise solvent dripping into the bearing. That is a genuinely different instruction from anything else in this catalogue, and it generalises: on any assembly where a lubricated bearing sits below the surface being cleaned, gravity decides whether the solvent stays on the outside. The wheel is then washed with brushes and soapy water and rinsed. A cassette that has been cleaned to bare metal is also easier to inspect, and worn sprocket teeth are visible in a way they are not under a film of grime.
