In detail
The detergent drawer is removable and gets washed; the housing it slides into does not, and it is where the actual problem sits. Undissolved detergent, fabric conditioner residue and water collect on the roof and back of the recess, and because the space is warm, dark and permanently damp between cycles it is one of the wet surfaces the washing-machine microbiology literature describes as supporting established bacterial communities. That is why a machine whose drawer has been scrubbed still smells within days. Fabric conditioner is the dominant contributor because it is a cationic coating designed to deposit rather than rinse away, so it builds a film that traps the rest. The treatment is mechanical rather than chemical: remove the drawer, reach into the housing with a brush and hot detergent solution, and clear the dispenser jets in the roof of the recess. Two habits change the conditions rather than the population: leaving the drawer open so the recess dries, and using conditioner sparingly. A machine cleaned this way responds to a maintenance wash; one that has not been will smell again regardless.
