A concentrated water-soluble dye with nothing else in it. Nothing has to be emulsified or dissolved — the only question is whether the surface has taken the colour up.

In detail
The drip tray and the used-grounds container are emptied as a preparation step in the manufacturer's own descaling procedure, which is a clue to how routine the job is meant to be. What makes them worth their own record is that they are the only part of a coffee machine whose problem is biological rather than mineral. Spent coffee grounds are wet, warm and rich, and the tray beneath them holds standing liquid — which is a growth surface in exactly the sense the microbiology section describes, and the reason a machine that has been descaled scrupulously can still smell. Descaling does not reach them, because the descaling circuit is the water path and these sit outside it. Two practical notes. After descaling it is normal for the grounds container to contain water, which the manufacturer says explicitly and which owners frequently mistake for a leak. And because the deposit is organic and the surfaces are plastic, the treatment is the dull one: remove, wash with warm water and a neutral detergent, rinse, and dry before refitting rather than replacing a wet tray into a warm machine. Nothing acidic is needed and nothing abrasive is appropriate on the plastic.
