Fibres, temperatures and the one stain where the universal instinct is exactly wrong — plus the label that outranks all of it.
What this area turns on
Heat is the variable that decides most laundry outcomes, and it works in both directions. It improves nearly every cleaning result except one: blood and other protein soils are set irreversibly by it, which is why the carpet trade specifies cool water for blood while specifying lukewarm for everything else. Wool has its own temperatures — a wool cycle at around 40°C or hand washing at 30°C, dried flat rather than hung — and silk's own trade body recommends against home washing altogether. Shrinkage is the same story: the trade body's mechanism puts the compaction in unrestrained tumble drying rather than in the wash, and describes a relaxed state beyond which a fabric stops shrinking at all. And technical outerwear inverts the lot — its manufacturer prescribes twenty minutes in the dryer AFTER the garment is dry, because heat is what restores the repellent finish. Two body-derived stains added in Sprint 21 sharpen the same point about heat and chemistry pushing the wrong way. Sunscreen leaves an orange mark that is not rust: avobenzone's 1,3-diketone group binds iron from the wash water into a coloured complex, which is why the stain appears AFTER washing and why it is worse where the water is iron-rich — and the same technical source records that high-pH washing and chlorine bleach SET it, so the two things a reader reaches for are the two that make it permanent. Sweat is the opposite kind of problem: fresh perspiration is nearly odourless, and the smell is bacteria breaking its fatty acids into volatile fragments. A controlled comparison found polyester shirts smelled significantly worse than cotton after the same session, because different bacteria colonised them and because polyester holds volatiles poorly. That is a fibre answer, not a detergent one. Sprint 22 closed the question Sprint 21 left open next to it. The yellow underarm mark is not a sweat stain: antiperspirant aluminium salts interact with the urea, proteins, fatty acids and sebum in perspiration and deposit as INSOLUBLE ALUMINIUM SOAPS, which are invisible at first and yellow later as their unsaturated fatty acids oxidise. That is why the mark appears only after months of repeated wear and washing, and it changes the advice completely — there is no fresh spill to treat, escalating afterwards only reaches material already bound into the fibre, and the intervention with the best claim is laundering more often, before there is a deposit to oxidise. In every case the garment's care label accounts for its dyes, trims and interlinings and outranks anything general about the fibre.
Where the obvious answer is wrong
Cases where the treatment that removes the problem is the treatment that ruins the surface it is on.
What should I use on red wine spilled on a wool carpet or jumper?
Wool is a protein fibre and oxidising bleaches attack it directly, degrading the keratin rather than the stain sitting on it. The damage is structural and it is not a mark that can be cleaned off afterwards: the fibre is weakened, and on a carpet the affected area wears differently from everything around it. The wool body approaches this from the other side, warning that methods aimed primarily at cotton or synthetic garments are not all suitable for wool.
What should I use on a greasy mark on a wool jumper?
Wool is a protein fibre, and the mechanism that converts fat to soap also hydrolyses protein. A strong alkali therefore attacks the garment on the same chemistry it uses on the stain, and the damage is to the fibre rather than to its appearance — it is not a mark that can be cleaned off afterwards. The wool body approaches the same problem from the other end, warning that methods primarily aimed at garments made from cotton or synthetic fibres are not all suitable for wool, and specifying a dilute wool detergent in TEPID water rather than anything stronger or hotter.

Hot water for a blood stain

Using laundry detergent on a carpet stain
