In detail
Worktops are where this catalogue's central argument is easiest to demonstrate: granite, engineered quartz, marble, laminate and solid timber can look alike under a kitchen light and none of them tolerates what the others do. Engineered quartz is the clearest case, because its manufacturer's prohibition list is long and surprising: oven and grill cleaners, dishwasher detergent, floor strippers, oil soaps, paint removers and strippers, and anything containing trichloroethane or methylene chloride, plus a general instruction to avoid chemicals with high or low pH. It also warns specifically against wipes and cleaners sold for granite, marble and other natural stones — a distinction most owners do not know exists. Marble and limestone are calcareous and etch on contact with any acid, including lemon juice and vinegar. Granite is siliceous and far more acid-tolerant, but its sealer is not. Laminate is chemically tough and structurally fragile, failing at the joints where water reaches the chipboard core. Timber needs its finish identified first. The instruction common to all of them is that a hot pan goes on a trivet, and a damaging spill is rinsed off at once with plenty of water.
