Cleaning appliances

Machines that clean things still have to be cleaned, and their manuals contradict most of what is said about them.

What this area turns on

Sprint 24 added the fridge and it produced the strangest instruction in the guide, which is not about a cleaner at all: let glass shelves warm to ROOM TEMPERATURE before washing them, and avoid hot water on cold glass. That is thermal stress - the mechanism this catalogue has modelled for a stove door since Sprint 1, running in the opposite direction. Its prohibited list is unusually specific about SURFACES as well as products: abrasives, window sprays, scouring cleansers, concentrated detergents and BLEACHES are excluded from plastic parts, interior liners AND gaskets - which is unfortunate, because a discoloured door seal is exactly the thing people reach for bleach on. The seal itself repeats the washing-machine finding: a folded rubber strip that traps crumbs and holds water, where the instruction ends with dry it fully, and drying is tied to keeping the seal tight rather than to appearance. Appliance manuals are more useful than appliance advice, and they disagree with it. A self-cleaning oven's manufacturer prohibits commercial oven cleaner in or around any part of the oven, because residue damages the interior on the next self-clean cycle — so the damage is delayed, and wiping it away proves nothing. A dishwasher manufacturer identifies cloudy glassware as etching and states it is permanent, which means the products sold to fix it cannot. A dryer manual prints its lint-filter instruction under a fire-hazard heading rather than under care and cleaning, with an interval of every load. The same range manual permits oven cleaner on a grill pan and forbids it on the grid that sits inside it, permits an ammonia soak for drip pans while banning ammonia on the metal around them, and forbids foil under those pans because of the electrical receptacle beneath. The washing machine study that measured contamination found the detergent drawer dirtier than anywhere else it looked, in the part of the machine that holds the cleaning chemistry. And the air fryer inverts the fear people bring to it: the manufacturer is most specific about the heating element everyone avoids — a soft sponge and hot water, or a soft brush, with steel wire excluded — while the coated basket everyone scrubs is the part with the actual prohibition on it. Sprint 22 added the two appliances where the cleaning question is really an electrical one, and they answer it identically. A toaster manual puts its cleaning instructions under a DANGER OF ELECTRIC SHOCK heading rather than under care: unplug it, let it cool, never immerse it, never put it in the dishwasher, do not steam-clean it, and do not run it without the crumb tray — which is a part of the appliance rather than a convenience. A computer manufacturer gives the same shape of rule for a laptop: power off and disconnect, microfibre cloth only, 70% isopropyl alcohol with 30% water, damp and never dripping, NEVER sprayed onto the product, nothing into the openings, and air dry with no visible moisture before power is restored. Read together the two are one rule stated twice — the risk is not what the liquid does to the surface but where the liquid goes — and the toaster's steam prohibition is the clearest illustration, because steam is water made better at getting inside. The drain filter shows what happens when you read two manuals instead of one. On the same component, one manufacturer says clean it every few months and opens by telling you to unplug the machine; the other says monthly and does not mention the power at all. One says only some models have a cleanable filter; the other says it is fitted to front-loaders and combination machines and never to top-loaders. There is no general procedure to publish here, and the guides that publish one have quietly picked a brand.

Where the obvious answer is wrong

Cases where the treatment that removes the problem is the treatment that ruins the surface it is on.

  • How do I remove limescale from a marble shower without ruining the marble?

    Marble is also calcium carbonate. The acid cannot distinguish between carbonate deposited by hard water and carbonate that is the stone itself, so it dissolves both. The result on the stone is etching: a dull, slightly rough patch where the polished surface has been chemically removed. It is not a stain and there is nothing left on the surface to clean off.

  • Can I use a limescale remover on the grout in my shower?

    Cementitious grout is alkaline based and is dissolved by acids — the tile trade states this plainly and draws the conclusion itself, that manufacturers do not advocate acids because they attack the cement in the grout. Grout is also porous, so an acidic product does not merely touch the surface. The damage is gradual and looks like wear rather than like chemical attack, which is why it is rarely attributed to the cleaner that caused it.

  • How do I get hard water spots off a bathroom mirror without wrecking it?

    A mirror is not a pane of glass. It is glass with a reflective coating and a protective backing, and both are exposed at every edge. The glass industry's mirror division states that acid or alkali cleaners can attack the front surface, the edges and the backing, and names cleaners containing ammonia or vinegar specifically as ones not to use. The failure is called black edge, it starts where liquid runs into the perimeter, and it is degradation of the mirror rather than dirt on it.

  • Can I use a limescale remover on my bathroom taps?

    The visible part of a modern tap is a plated, physical-vapour-deposited or powder-coated finish a few microns thick, not solid metal. The manufacturer's care sheet states that PVD finishes must not meet cleaners containing ammonia, bleach or acid, which excludes most limescale removers and a good share of bathroom sprays. Because the finish is microns thick there is no margin: material lost is coating lost, the dulling is progressive, and it cannot be polished back because there is nothing underneath to polish.

  • Can I use oven cleaner on the burnt-on mess in my self-cleaning oven?

    The manufacturer prohibits it in absolute terms: no commercial oven cleaner or oven liner protective coating of any kind should be used in or around any part of the oven. The mechanism is delayed rather than immediate. RESIDUE FROM OVEN CLEANERS WILL DAMAGE THE INSIDE OF THE OVEN WHEN THE SELF-CLEAN CYCLE IS USED — so the harm happens later, at pyrolytic temperature, to whatever the cleaner left behind. Someone who sprays, wipes and sees nothing wrong has not shown the practice is safe; they have postponed the test. The same guide notes that even soap left on the liner causes additional stains when the oven is heated.

  • Can I leave a cast iron pan to soak to get the burnt-on food off?

    Cast iron is bare iron protected by a layer of polymerised oil, and that protection is defeated by water rather than by scrubbing. The manufacturer's wording is blunt: SOAKING CAST IRON IN WATER IS A RECIPE FOR RUST. It extends the same warning to cookware left in the sink to soak, put in the dishwasher, allowed to air dry, or left in a moisture-prone environment — and states that a dishwasher will remove the seasoning and likely cause rust. The failure is not the burnt food coming off. It is that the pan is left in prolonged contact with the one thing its finish exists to keep off it.

  • How do I get limescale off a shower screen without damaging the glass?

    The glass association's cleaning paper excludes acids from glass cleaning solutions as a class, naming hydrochloric and hydrofluoric as its examples, and warns that glass can be permanently damaged if it is infrequently or improperly cleaned. It also rules out the two things people escalate to when the acid does not work: abrasive cleaning materials, and razor blades or metal scrapers, which are excluded from routine cleaning altogether. The mechanism it gives for scratching is not the cleaner but trapped grit, so scrubbing a gritty screen is worse than leaving it.

Assessed and found wanting

Widely repeated techniques in this area that the evidence does not support, or supports only in part.

  • Natural describes where something came from and predicts nothing about what it does. The UK regulator lists this belief among the myths it exists to correct.

  • The most popular cleaning combination on the internet, and the two ingredients largely cancel each other out. Both are useful — separately.

  • It works in the moment and creates the next problem. The embedded carbon steel particles it leaves behind are what later look like the stainless steel rusting.

  • Genuinely excellent at one job and promoted into a universal one. The surfaces it is most often recommended for online include several it permanently damages.

  • The stone genuinely resists kitchen acids. The worktop is not only the stone, and the trade still does not recommend acidic cleaners on it.

  • Among the most confidently held rules in domestic cooking, and the manufacturer contradicts it outright. The prohibition outlived the soap it was formed around.

  • It removes the scale and dissolves the grout. Cement is alkaline, and the tile trade says acids attack it — which is what most bathroom products are.

  • Reaching for the strongest thing in the cupboard when a mark will not shift. On engineered quartz the manufacturer prohibits it outright.

  • The glass industry's mirror division names vinegar explicitly among the things not to use. So does it name ammonia — which is what the shop-bought alternative contains.

  • Right about the bath, the taps and the mirror. Wrong about the toilet and basin, where the manufacturer permits a soft abrasive outright.

  • The manufacturer's instruction is not that it works poorly. It is that it can damage the flush valve and other working parts.

  • A mild abrasive in a tube, and the tap manufacturer names it specifically among the things that must not be left on the finish.

  • The glass industry excludes blades and metal scrapers from routine cleaning outright, and the scratches may only become visible months later at the right sun angle.

  • The manufacturer prohibits it outright, and gives a mechanism nobody expects: the residue is what damages the oven, and it does so on the next self-clean cycle.

  • Sometimes they can, and sometimes the cloudiness is etching — which the manufacturer states is permanent. The two look identical and have opposite answers.

  • The manufacturer specifies before every load, and prints it under a fire-hazard heading rather than under care and cleaning.

  • Saves cleaning, and the manufacturer forbids it with three consequences named: shock, fire or damage to the range.

  • One accessory, two parts, opposite instructions. The manufacturer permits oven cleaner on the pan and prohibits it on the grid.

  • For acidic spills the manufacturer says immediately, and names the consequence as discolouration rather than dirt.

    The appliance that cleans everything else, and the one whose own cleaning problem has actually been measured. The contamination is not spread evenly, which changes what to do about it.

  • Tumble dryer

    The one appliance whose routine cleaning task is printed under a fire-hazard heading rather than under care and cleaning.

  • The one part of an oven the manufacturer says not to clean at all. Three zones of the same door take three different treatments.

  • The only part of a cooker where the manufacturer excludes abrasives of any kind — and the reason is the lettering, not the surface.

  • Drip pan

    The one component where the manufacturer prescribes an ammonia soak — and forbids the foil lining almost everyone uses.

  • Two parts of one accessory with opposite rules: the manufacturer permits oven cleaner on the pan and prohibits it on the grid.

  • Toaster

    Thing to clean

    A heating element in a slot full of crumbs. The manual's cleaning section sits under an electric-shock heading and a fire heading, which is the correct framing.

  • Not an optional convenience. The manual says do not run the toaster without it, and the crumbs it catches are a stated fire risk.

  • The folded rubber ring around the door. Its top and its bottom were measured as different environments, and only the bottom is a problem.

  • A trap that catches what should never have reached the pump. Two manufacturers give two different intervals and only one says to unplug the machine — which is the whole answer to whether there is a general procedure.

  • The most heavily contaminated site measured in a domestic washing machine — despite being the part that holds the detergent.

  • Lint filter
